About

Nether Loirston Growers Association (NLGA) was formed in late summer 2010 with the Cove Community Council as the driving force who successfully managed to secure a funding application from the Scottish Government’s Climate Challenge Fund in conjunction with the Aberdeen City Council, local groups and local residents.

This fund has supported us to establish the Allotments and Community Garden site at Nether Loirston, situated behind the Altens Community Centre.  This site has been leased to Nether Loirston Growers Association by Aberdeen City Council for a minimum period of 5 years from February 2011.

We are a group of local residents volunteering our time to manage the allotment site and encourage community involvement.

What we aim to do

  • Manage the  allotment site for local people within Cove and Altens for the long term good of the community
  • Promote and encourage gardening and the local growing of food within the community
  • Provide educational opportunities for local community groups such as; food growing, healthy eating, composting etc.
  • Create within the site suitable facilities for those with a variety of abilities.
  • Develop a shared area within the allotment site for social activities.
  • Hold fund-raising activities

Benefits of an allotment

The food you grow will contribute to a healthy diet for you and your family.

Gardening is good physical activity and can help reduce the risk of heart disease, diabetes and cancer.

Children enjoy learning about, growing and eating the food they have produced themselves.
